Insight: Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR)
If pressure equipment fails in use, it can injure or kill people nearby and cause serious damage to property. Every year hundreds of cases are reported to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) – some resulting in fatal injury, some causing damage to property but nearly all result in a loss of production.
Under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000, it is the duty of an employer/responsible person to ensure pressure systems:
Are operated safely
Are adequately maintained
Have suitable written schemes of examination (WSE)
Are examined by a competent person in accordance with a WSE
Have up to date and securely held records relating to their construction, repair, modification and examination
It is also essential that the responsible person knows what pressure systems operate within their workplace so that it can be demonstrated the systems are working within their safe limits.
